As entrepreneurs, it is important to take care of our mental health as it affects how we work, how we think, and how we feel. Furthermore, research shows the importance of managing stress and maintaining positive mental health for successful business outcomes.

From Burnout to Breakthrough

Several months after establishing my third office I was tired. I was drained. I felt burnout. I felt lost. I felt stuck. I felt alone. Financially, the business revenue was at the highest level to date at that time. However, I was also fighting insurance companies for reimbursement leading to inconsistent cash flow, which of course is imperative for the sustainability of any business.

But something was also missing. Like a part of me. I was so consumed by the intricate details of building my mental health practice that I had to put my doctoral studies as well as other obligations on hold because I was managing business operations in Durham, NC; Columbia, SC; and Greenville, SC.

Essentially, I was experiencing what I’ve since coined The Mental Cost of Entrepreneurship.

I needed a break. Near my Greenville, SC office I would see the sign to Atlanta. I believe it was something like 172 miles away. I began to bargain with God for perhaps just a day trip to Atlanta. That didn’t happen as something pulled me back into the office. Ultimately, in mid-October of 2015, I was burnt out. Mentally and physically exhausted. I had no choice but to take a break. Thus, I booked a getaway to Atlanta.

I gained so much clarity and peace during that brief getaway. So much so that just 2 weeks later, I took a life-changing step on my Greatness journey when I walked into greater obedience by setting my footprints in Atlanta, GA on October 31, 2015. Not to live in the traditional sense…But to live in obedience!
